This is the story of an Indian joint family. The head of this joint family is Thakur Baldev Singh, while his sons Vishwanath, Atma and Shyam are like his three pillars. Besides this he has two daughters - one married to Raja Raghunath Singh and the other one married to Kishan Seth; who are both brothers. We follow their respective lives in detail through their marriages, birth of children and other events that happen in their life-time. After a fateful battle, Baldeo Singh had 4 sons. Atma Singh, the eldest son is the only one who shows no interest in being a farmer. He is a member of the Congress Party and his dream is to become a leader of his party. He knows the importance of having a good name in society and spends excessive money on buying arms which can be used against anyone who decides to cross him. This leads him into many financial problems that force him to lead a life without being able to have a wife or children. His wife gets pregnant but loses her unborn baby. Another son, Kishan Seth makes it big in politics through the help of Baldeo Singh. He gets married to Shanti Devi who is completely different from him. Kishan Seth is an educated man with modern thinking, while Shanti Devi is a religious, conservative lady who believes in following the family traditions at any cost. Although she constantly nags about his habits and wants to change him but recognizes his potential to rise in politics and tends to support him. Raghunath Singh, the son of Baldeo Singh's younger brother Kishan Lal lives separately in his own house with his wife Chandrawati.
